Symptoms
•    Unusal increase in the blood loss
•    Menses lasting longer than 7 days
•    Frequent flooding requiring excessive use of heavy pads and tampons, more than every 4 hours or more than once at night-time.
•    Passing large blood clots wider than 3 cm in diameter.
•    Tiredness and Iron deficiency anaemia on a blood test.

Causes

•    Hormonal imbalance (Dysfunctional uterine bleeding)
•    Fibroids
•    Endometrial polyps
•    Endometrial Hyperplasia
•    Adenomyosis, which is uterine enlargement due to the presence of blood in the muscle wall of the uterus
•    Uterine infections
•    Abnormal vessels
•    Contraceptive intra uterine devices
•    Endometrial cancer
•    Blood and clotting disorders also thyroid problems

Diagnosis

Blood investigations, Ultrasound, Hysteroscopy and curettage and Laparoscopy can be used to aid in diagnosing the problem.
Treatment
•    Medical : in the form of hormones or hormone IUCD( Mirena)also Non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
•    Surgical: 1) Endometrial ablation which is destruction of the lining of the womb through the vagina-Day only procedure. 2) Myomectomy, which removal of the fibroid 3) Hysterectomy.
